A rookie Ontario Provincial Police officer fatally shot on the job Tuesday is being remembered as a “wonderful officer” with “the biggest heart of gold.”

28-year-old Haldimand Constable Greg Pierzchala was shot while responding to a vehicle in a ditch west of Hagersville.

He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

“Speaking with all of his platoon mates at the hospital tonight, everybody commented about what a fantastic police officer Greg, what a tremendous individual he was,” OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique told reporters on Sunday evening, “He had served with us as a special constable at Queen’s Park prior to becoming a provincial constable. He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. This was a man who at 5 years old decided he wanted to be a police officer and he had a brief opportunity to live out his dream.”

Two suspects, a 25-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, have been arrested in connection to the shooting.

Details about charges are expected to be announced Wednesday.

Tributes for the fallen officer have come in from leaders in policing and politics, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw.
