For anyone who ever went to a punk show wearing torn clothes and safety pins, that was Vivienne Westwood’s doing.
Vivienne Westwood has died at the age of 81.
Details of her death have not been given.
Westwood was a self-taught seamstress and teamed professionally and romantically with Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren in the 1970s.
Her urban street style paired with The Sex Pistols’ music and attitude created the “punk rock look” that still survives.
ZoomerMedia friend Jeanne Beker was the long time host of Moses Znaimer’s Fashion Television.
“Vivienne Westwood was irreverent, yet she had an incredible respect for tradition, and especially British tradition” Jeanne explained, “Her use of fabrics was so profound. She reintroduced plaid, which is an old fashioned kind of fabric, but she introduced it in a very modern sense and it became very hot again. And this is going back to the early 80s.”
Vivienne Westwood transitioned into haute couture without losing her edge and enjoyed a long career as a fashion maverick.
