In a celebration halted for the past two years by the pandemic, Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and his family waved to throngs of New Year’s well-wishers at the Imperial Palace.

In his appearance Monday alongside his wife and daughter, Naruhito prayed for people’s happiness and world peace.

Princess Aiko, 21, was giving her first public New Year’s greeting. Many events involving the Japanese imperial family are only attended by the adult royals.

Emperor Emeritus Akihito, who abdicated in favour of his son in 2019, was also present.

Because of pandemic restrictions on large crowds, the people allowed on the Imperial Palace grounds this year were pre-selected.
