The French version of the Academy Awards has taken a major step to address sexual violence within its ranks.

The Cesar Awards, which are scheduled for February 25th, is banning anyone facing a potential prison sentence for sexual assault.

The move follows a backlash in 2020 when Roman Polanski, who is wanted in the U.S. for statutory rape, won best director.

The French Academy is facing an ongoing reckoning over accusations of sexual violence in the film industry.

The organization says it is acting out of respect for any possible victims.  The rule also applies to anyone who has been convicted of such a sex offence.
