The mandatory quarantine that had been established at the onset of the pandemic three years ago is no longer required for the first international travelers arriving in China.
Border restrictions are being loosened even as the virus spreads throughout China amid what some claim is Beijing’s lack of transparency.
Testing requirements are increasingly being imposed by foreign governments on Chinese tourists, most recently by Germany, Sweden, Portugal and Canada.
Thousands of tourists from semi-autonomous Hong Kong entered mainland China on Sunday, some of whom had been cut off from their families since the outbreak.
They must still present a negative test result obtained within 48 hours, much like other international travelers, which is a requirement that China has resisted when it has been imposed by other nations.
