The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who awed critics and readers with his insight and humor has died at age 84.

Serbian-born American Charles Simic wrote many books and was ranked by many as among the greatest and most original poets of his times.

His bleak but comic perspective was shaped in part by his years growing up in wartime Yugoslavia and he didn’t write in English until well into his 20s.

Simic won the Pulitzer Prize in 1990 and his most recent book “No Land in Sight” was published last year.
