Via Rail is saying “sorry” to travellers for extensive delays and cancellations over the holidays as it offers refunds and travel credits for those completely immobilized.

In a statement, the CEO says Via Rail has not lived up to its own standards.

The railway blames a combination of a severe winter storm and the derailment of a freight train for disruptions particularly along the Quebec City / Windsor corridor and elsewhere in Eastern Canada.

While is says some factors were beyond its control, the Crown corporation admits it should have been more forthcoming in sharing information about delays and in communicating updates.

It will also review its performance with the help of outside experts.

A parliamentary committee voted this week to  launch a study into the causes behind Canada’s chaotic holiday travel season by inviting representatives from Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing Airlines and Via Rail to testify.

The committee also wants to hear from passengers, who’s Christmas plans were derailed.
