Toronto’s mayor says the version of the 2023 City of Toronto budget he introduced Tuesday will likely have revisions before it goes to Toronto City Council next month.

John Tory has announced a spending plan which would see a 5.5 percent property tax increase, along with a 1.5 percent increase in the City Building Fund and a 3 percent increase for water, wastewater and solid waste.

“But if there are things we can do to make life better for people in the City of Toronto that can involve some changes to the budget, that’s why we have this public process that begins today (Tuesday). And that’s why the actual budget that I will present for consideration to council will, I’m sure, be slightly different than the one we’re presenting now.”

Gord Perks is among the city councillors critical of the proposed budget and he blames John Tory.

“Mayor Tory, unlike every mayor before him, has refused to come forward with a long term financial plan, and because of that, our services are crumbling and our state of good repair for our buses, roads, the community centres is falling behind. This is a falling behind budget,” accused Perks.

“I would just say to Mr. Perks, well find, what would you do?” Tory responded during a conversation with CP24 on Wednesday, “I mean would you cut services or would you have taxes increase by even more? That’s what I suspect he would say. He would increase taxes by even more, maybe 10 or 15 percent, and I said no to that.”

Members of the Budget Committee are inviting Toronto residents and business owners to weigh in on the proposed budget.

Meetings will be held:

• Toronto City Hall, Tuesday, January 17, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. onwards
