If you’re a Toronto driver, then you probably already know this.

But now there is evidence to report Toronto is one of the worst cities in the world for traffic.

Scientists with INRIX drew on four years of mobility and GPS data to identify traffic patterns in various cities around the world.

Toronto is ranked seventh globally and first in Canada for worst traffic, with commuters losing an average of 118 hours on GTA roads and highways due to congestion during 2022.

In North America, Toronto ranks third behind only Chicago and Boston.

Matti Siemiatycki is a professor of geography, planning and infrastructure at the University of Toronto.

He says planners here are not getting to the core of the issue.

“We continue to widen highways and elsewhere,” Siemiatycki explains, “We’re building sprawl around the periphery of the region and it’s not working. It’s making the problem worse.”

According to the report, the average vehicle speed in Toronto last year during peak traffic times was 20 km/hr, and in off-peak times, 61 km/hr.

The worst cities in the world for traffic are London, Chicago and Paris, in that order.
