This news is for you if you made an online purchase at the LCBO between January 5th and 10th.

A statement from the Liquor Control Board of Ontario says personal data of some customers may have been accessed by an unauthorized party.

It goes on to say “malicious code” was embedded on check-out pages on the LCBO website.

As a result, names, email and mailing addresses, and credit card information of customers may have been compromised between January 5th and January 10th.

Meantime, technology experts say cyberattacks are on the rise after a wave of such attacks on targets that have also included Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children last month.

Carmi Levy is among these experts and told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, it’s important for companies, like airlines, hospitals and government agencies to have a better understanding of how to manage business continuity during digital outages.

“And they need to telegraph that externally so that if you are a client of their’s that you know what to do,” Levy explained, “And so every time an event like this happens, I use that as an opportunity to remind organizations, when’s the last time you looked at those plans. You’ve got to dust them off, you’ve got to look at them regularly and then you’ve got make sure that all the folks who are important to you know what your plans are so that they’re not in the dark when something does go dark.”

There were also outages this week at University Health Network in Toronto and the Federal Aviation Administration in the U.S., but both were not suspected to be the result of cyberattacks.
