The country’s premiers have all called on Ottawa to take “urgent action” to improve the nation’s bail system.

In a letter dated Friday to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the premiers of all 13 provinces and territories state that the time for action is now and that “our heroic first responders cannot wait.”

The letter, which originated in Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s office, comes amid growing calls for reform after the late December killing of 28-year-old Constable Greg Pierzchala, a member of the Ontario Provincial Police.

According to court records, Randall McKenzie, one of the two people charged with first-degree murder in connection with his death, had his bail first denied in a different case involving assault and weapons charges but was eventually released following a review.

According to the documents, McKenzie missed his August court hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The letter from the premiers acknowledges an increase in calls for legislation to stop accused individuals on bail from committing new crimes.
