A 20-foot-tall monument was unveiled Friday at the America’s oldest public park honouring Dr. Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King’s legacy.

The sculpture called ‘The Embrace’ symbolizes the hug the couple shared after Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Artist Hand Willis Thomas – who was chosen out of 126 submissions – said that with so many monuments dedicated to war, he created one that spreads a message of love and the Kings’ message of nonviolence.

Although the 46 year old artist was not alive during Dr. King’s lifetime, he said he lived to see Mrs. King’s trailblazing efforts to create  Martin Luther King Day as a national holiday.

The 19-ton bronze artwork is made up of about 609 pieces is now a permanent fixture in Boston.
