After years of research, the Berlin museum authority says it is ready to return hundreds of human skulls from the former German colony of East Africa.
Scientists examined 1,135 skulls at the city’s Museum of Prehistory and Early History during their research.
Of those, 904 could be assigned to Rwandan areas, 202 to Tanzania, and 22 to Kenya. A more precise assignment was not possible for the remaining seven skulls.
Hermann Parzinger, president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, which oversees many of Berlin’s museums, including the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, stated on Wednesday that the authority was prepared to offer “immediate restitution.”
