Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce Wednesday morning that he and Canada’s premiers will meet next month in Ottawa to try to come up with a new funding deal for health care.

A Canadian Press report quotes two unnamed federal sources as saying the meeting is not intended to finalize a new pact, but rather to solidify the steps needed to reach one.

The premiers and territorial leaders want the federal government to boost its share of health-care budgets from 22 percent to 35 percent, while the Trudeau Liberals say that cannot happen without accountability that the funds will be spent on meaningful improvements in patient care.

Bill Van Gorder is chief operating and chief policy officer at CARP – A New Vision of Aging.

He says what’s missing in this conversation is improvement to home care.

“We’re never going to build enough long term care homes to keep the number of people in the current system who would need to be there,” VanGorder told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, “And that can only be solved by better home care. And that can only be solved by having more people to deliver it, so home care in your own community and staffing are the key issues.”

The prime minister and his cabinet ministers are in Hamilton Wednesday wrapping up their three-day retreat ahead of next week’s return of Parliament.
