Doug Ford is commenting on the city’s plan to add 80 police officers to patrol Toronto’s transit system in response to the recent spike in violence.

“Mayor Tory has come up with a plan, but it’s a band-aid solution.”

Speaking at an event related to the new Brampton School of Medicine, the Premier also called for more full time officers adding there are now 500 fewer officers in Toronto compared to when he was at city hall.

“We need full time police officers, because right now, the 80 police officers they’re adding, which is great, is paid duty, so they’re really working on time-and-a-half and so we’re really relying on the existing police officers to come in and sign up for the callbacks as they call them,” Ford told reporters.

Meantime, commuter reaction to the plan is mixed.

Damira Pan says she’s witnessed violence on transit in the past and having extra officers at subway stations makes her feel safer.

“It’s a good idea, I’m always looking out for the officers in case I’m concerned about my safety.”

Toronto police are deploying more than 80 officers to reduce victimization, prevent crimes of opportunity and enhance public safety.

And the TTC is hiring more special constables and outreach workers while also working to improve its camera system.
