Former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, who served as Mayor for 36 years, has died. She was 101.

Premier Doug Ford, in a statement, said McCallion died peacefully at her home in Mississauga early this morning.

Ford called McCallion his friend and mentor.  “There isn’t a single person who met Hazel who didn’t leave in awe of her force of personality.

I count myself incredibly lucky to have called Hazel my friend over these past many years. As I entered the world of politics, I was fortunate enough to learn from her wisdom and guidance, which she selflessly offered until the very end.”

Current Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said, “Hazel was not only my mentor and political role model but the reason why so many Canadian women were inspired to enter politics.

She has left an indelible mark on our City and her legacy will continue to be felt for generations to come.

We should all strive to follow her example. Today, I join all Mississauga residents in expressing my sincere condolences to Hazel’s family and friends.”

Zoomer Radio Founder Moses Znaimer said, “We got used to the idea that Hazel would never die.

She was a role model and a beacon of the value of keeping on keeping on: indefatigable, unstoppable, always physically active, always personally engaged, always doing something useful for her community and her friends.

She was a great leader and a fun person to hang with It makes me very sad to know shes gone.”
