As we continue to celebrate the life of the legendary long time Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, we’ve learned from the current mayor some of the plans in the works to pay tribute to Hazel.

Bonnie Crombie tells Zoomer Radio that Hazel McCallion will lie in state at Mississauga City Hall at a time still to be determined, but beginning later this week.

And then as early February 9th, again still to be determined, there will be a public celebration of life at a location that would accommodate many mourners.

The public events will be followed by a smaller and private funeral and burial.

Mayor Crombie joined The Morning Zoom with Sam and Jane to share her memories of the great Hazel McCallion whom she says was a remarkable woman.

“She made prime ministers shake in their boots, let’s be honest, she didn’t sleep,” Mayor Crombie recalled, “And she’s be up at 4 in the morning sending emails to staff and by 6am she had enough and got on the phone and she would be calling up a minister or a premier or the prime minister, saying, This is Hazel calling (Crombie said in Hazel’s voice), let me tell you how it is, and they would recoil at the sound of her voice.”

Mayor Crombie is the first to sign a book of condolence for Hazel McCallion at Mississauga City Hall Monday. People are welcome to add their thoughts in this book, as well as in books of condolence at community centres across Mississauga and at Brampton City Hall.
