Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Ottawa is talking to provinces and territories about new standards for the quality, design and operations of long-term care homes in Canada.
The Health Standards Organization has released updated guidelines that say each resident should receive at least four-hours of direct care per-day.
The non-profit group’s experts say the standards will only be useful if the government puts them into practice and ensures they’re followed.
Ontario’s Long-Term Care Minister Paul Calandra says he’ll take a look at the standards, but that he has no interest in ”watering down” what the Ford government’s already doing to improve care.
He’s confident after reviewing the standards Ontario will ”still have the highest standards in Canada.”
Calandra points out the province has already legislated a goal of an average of four-hours of direct care per-resident per-day by 2025.
