A motion to keep warming centres open around the clock until April 15th will be debated by Toronto city councillors Tuesday.

The proposal was put forward by Councillor Alejandra Bravo who told The Morning Zoom with Sam and Jane, she is hopeful her colleagues will do the right thing.

“We’re asking council to admit or recognize and name that homelessness is a public health crisis in Toronto right now,” Bravo explained, “That’s important, if you don’t call something what it than you won’t do anything about it. And we want the threshold of minus-15 to be studied because doctors and health professionals tells us that hypothermia and the loss of limbs because of cold exposure happens at much higher temperatures than at minus-15.”

Councillor Bravo says conservative estimates put the number of Toronto’s homeless at 8500, but said the number is more like 19,000 based on academic studies and what she’s been told by homeless advocates.

Members of Toronto’s Board of Health endorsed Councillor Bravo’s motion for 24-7 warming centres through the winter.

Tuesday’s council meeting follows a protest yesterday when dozens of people gathered outside Toronto City Hall to speak out against what they say is inaction that’s killing and injuring people experiencing homelessness.
