The death toll from the train crash in Greece has climbed to 57, with at least 48 still in hospital.

Family members are awaiting the results of DNA testing to identify more victims.

Rail workers went on strike today claiming the transit system is outdated, underfunded and dangerous. Anger boiled over in the streets with protesters clashing with police outside the headquarters of the rail operator.

The government has blamed human error, and a railway official was charged with manslaughter.

But one government minister blames austerity during Greece’s economic crisis in the 2000s for contributing to a lack of investment in the railways.

Tuesday’s rail collision of a passenger train and a freight train is the country deadliest rail crash.
