It appears there is one more interested party in the race for Toronto’s next mayor.

Ward 2 City Councillor Stephen Holyday has issued a statement saying he is considering becoming a candidate.

He says he’s “worried there are no candidates that offer the kind of leadership and resolve needed to improve our city’s deteriorating conditions.”

Holyday also says “over the last several weeks, I have heard from many people expressing support in asking me to run for mayor of Toronto.”

Holyday was first elected to city council in 2014 and was appointed by former Mayor John Tory as deputy mayor in 2017 and 2018.

Several of Holyday’s council colleagues have also expressed interest in the job of mayor, including Brad Bradford and Josh Matlow.

In fact, Matlow has said as recently as Tuesday he is “strongly exploring” entering the race. And Wednesday, a group called Friends of Josh Matlow plan to release an open letter urging him to run.

According to a copy obtained by the Star, the group says it’s time for “a change from the Ford/Tory status quo,” and Matlow “has the vision, courage, compassion, and energy to lead Toronto in the progressive direction” it needs to address its challenges.

Among the two dozen signatories are former Toronto mayor John Sewell, street nurse Cathy Crowe, academic Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, tenant advocate Geordie Dent, musician Rollie Pemberton (also known as Cadence Weapon), and former MuchMusic host Erica Ehm.

As for Bradford, he formed an advisory group last month to explore a possible run or mayor.

Former Toronto City Councillor Ana Bailao is also considering a run, and being advised by veteran Liberal backroomer Tom Allison and outspoken Conservative Nick Kouvalis, both of whom worked on successful Tory mayoral campaigns.

Nominations for the June 26th Toronto Mayoral byelection open April 3rd after city council confirms the mayor’s seat vacant on March 29th.
