Winning an Oscar was surreal!

That comment from newly minted Academy Award winner Sarah Polley.

The Toronto filmmaker won for best adapted screenplay for Women Talking, based on the novel by Miriam Toews.

The 44-year-old was one of four Canadians to become first-time Oscar winners at Sunday night’s star-studded bash in Hollywood.

She says she went into the night with low expectations.

“It’s kind of the best way to experience stuff like this, you know I did not think I was going to win, I didn’t think we were going to be nominated, I’m able to kind of enjoy everything like these big shiny toys that I really didn’t expect to get for Christmas,” said Polley.

Among the other Canadian winners were actor Brendan Fraser and makeup artist Adrien Morot for The Whale, and documentary director Daniel Roher for Navalny.
