Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Russian-occupied Mariupol, in what critics say is a defiant just days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him for war crimes.
Putin was flown into Mariupol by helicopter and toured districts around the city.
According to Russian officials, Putin spoke with some residents and there are claims he was invited into a resident’s home, without having to coerce the local homeowner. As of now there is no video evidence to support the claims.
News of the visit comes after the ICC issued arrest warrants on Friday for Putin and a top-ranking Russian official for an alleged scheme to deport Ukrainian children to Russia.
Mariupol became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance during weeks of relentless Russian attacks last year.
