Major comedy stars paid tribute to actor Adam Sandler on Sunday as he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour.

Entertainment royalty gathered at Washington’s Kennedy Centre as the 56-year-old Sandler received the prestigious honour.

Sandler thanked his parents and siblings for what he called “that weird irrational confidence thing” he guesses he still has.

The New Hampshire native first came to national attention on TV’s “Saturday Night Live” before moving on to a string of hit movies including “Happy Gilmore”.

Dana Carvey remarked that few are this beloved and spent so many successful years in the business.

Sandler joked the award one day might be used to bludgeon him in his sleep.

He becomes the 24th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize.
