The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will publish a report Wednesday on its investigation into the more than two-year-old sinking of a scallop dragger off the coast of Nova Scotia.
On December 15, 2020, the Chief William Saulis capsized off Delaps Cove, about 50 kilometres north of Digby, Nova Scotia, killing all six members of its crew.
The bodies of Captain Charles Roberts, Eugene (Geno) Michael Francis, Aaron Cogswell, Leonard Gabriel, and Dan Forbes were never found.
On the stony shoreline, crew member Michael Drake’s body washed up.
The safety board report is anticipated to look into why the 17-metre vessel’s operators did not need to do a stability evaluation after they made structural adjustments and attached a steel A-frame for trawling.
Transport Canada has said that a stability assessment wasn’t required when it conducted an inspection back in April 2017, three months before regulations requiring assessments for vessels with major modifications came into effect.
