Ahead of Joe Biden’s first presidential visit to Ottawa later today, comes word that the two leaders are close to a deal to resolve concerns about migrants crossing into Canada.
An agreement’s said to be near pending talks and agreement between the U.S. president and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Apparently, a senior federal official says the framework of a resolution is in place, and all that’s needed is Biden’s signature.
The Trudeau government has been pushing for American movement on the Safe Third Country Agreement, which requires asylum seekers at official border entry points be turned back to the first country they arrived in.
The bilateral pact does not cover unofficial crossing, and that loophole is what’s allowed asylum seekers to legally cross at unofficial points like Roxham Road in Quebec or Emerson, Manitoba, and then make refugee claims.
