U-S President opened his speech in the House of Commons with “Bonjour Canada” and then took at shot at the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“I like your teams except the Leafs, I’ll tell you why, they beat the
( Philadelphia) flyers, that’s why,” Biden explained drawing a wide reaction jeers and a standing ovation. “I married a Philly girl and if I didn’t say that I’d be sleeping alone fellas. I like you a lot but not that much.”
In his lengthy address, Biden called the Canada / U.S relationship exceptional.
With Chinese election interference looming large over the visit, the President had this gaffe mid way though his speech while speaking on an unrelated topic.
“I applaud China for stepping up, ah excuse me, I applaud Canada, you can tell what I’m thinking about China, but I won’t get into that yet,” said Biden.
Earlier, former prime minister Jean Chretien says he’s not convinced foreign interference is a major problem in Canada.
Biden also gave a shout out to the two Michaels, who made their first public appearance since their release from a Chinese jail.
Before Biden spoke, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the House and with the words ‘make no mistake, these are serious times’ Trudeau touched on a number issues including green energy, immigration, and the Ukraine war.
“You’re a true friend to Canada, and that matters more than ever in this consequential moment.”
The President and Prime Minister said in a joint statement they’re bolstering Norad, updating the Safe Third Country Agreement and launching a one-year energy transformation task force.
They are also announcing new spending on alternative fuel corridors, critical minerals, semiconductor projects, the Great Lakes and Arctic radar.
