After a brutal five-week leadership election that revealed significant divisions within the campaign for independence, Scotland’s ruling party is choosing a new leader.
The Scottish National Party is selecting First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s successor.
After eight years as the party’s and Scotland’s semi-autonomous government’s head, Sturgeon abruptly announced her resignation last month.
The 72,000 SNP members are voting between parliamentarian Ash Regan, Scottish Finance Secretary Kate Forbes, and Health Secretary Humza Yousaf.
Although all three contenders favour independence, they have different ideas about Scotland’s economy and society.
The winner will be announced on Monday.
The Scottish parliament is scheduled to endorse the new party leader as first minister on Tuesday.
