The Royal Canadian Legion is requesting more information from the Liberal government regarding their pledge of additional funding to alleviate ongoing backlogs and delays for sick and injured veterans.

The budgetary commitment was made by the Liberals in the federal budget presented on Tuesday, allocating $156 million over five years to address the issue that has come to represent the main source of resentment for the country’s veteran population.

Nevertheless, the budget plan doesn’t really go into detail on how the money would be used, including whether it will go towards recruiting new employees.

While tens of thousands of veterans continue to wait months or even years to learn whether they qualify for federal help, Legion dominion President Bruce Julian believes clarity is essential.

The government has been urged by the legion and others to hire additional permanent employees at Veterans Affairs Canada in addition to making other adjustments to reduce the backlog.

But, the Liberals disregarded those pleas and instead hired hundreds of temporary staff members to deal with the backlog of unprocessed claims, which has now started to grow once more.
