Spring is finally here but that doesn’t mean we won’t still have some cold weather. If you’re eager to get gardening, the experts have some advice on the best time to get digging.

“Stay off the soil if it’s still soggy,” warns horticulturalist Charlie Dobbin, host The Garden Show on Zoomer Radio. “Be award of the compaction you create if you’re out too early walking on the soil.”

But Charlie says you can still get your hands dirty these next few weeks. “If you can access your gardens from a sidewalk or a driveway or some hard surface then for sure, get down on your hands and knees and fiddle around.”

Growing your own food continues to trend up amid the high cost of groceries.

“Whether it’s herbs or vegetables or a community garden or even a balcony,” says Charlie.

Director of Horticulture with the Toronto Botanical Garden Roger Gettig says the trend for more compact vegetable plans is booming due to space constraints.

“If you don’t have room for a big garden but still have room for fresh produce you can grow them yourself by getting these more compact varieties, like smaller tomato plants you can grow in a window box or on a patio.”

The other big trend is the use of pollinator plants.

“We’re really thinking about not just the bees, but all the flying insects that do all the pollination on all our garden plants,” says Charlie.

While the May long weekend is traditionally the time to plan annuals and perennials, there are things you can do now to bring some colour in time for Easter.

“Get out to your local garden centre, pick up some pots of bulbs or pots of pansies and make a beautiful container garden for your front door, nothing cheers people up more than flowers,” adds Charlie.
