Brad Treliving is about to learn what it means to come full circle.
The first order of business as Maple Leafs general manager will be going to Arizona, where he began his NHL career with the Coyotes, and also where Auston Matthews happens to live.
”We’re talking about an elite player in the world.  Getting to Auston is a priority,” Treliving told his introductory news conference.
”That’s priority No. 1.”
Matthews is eligible to sign a contract extension as of July 1.
The long-term futures of Mitch Marner and William Nylander also must be addressed soon.
The trio along with Captain John Tavares make up the Core Four.
While saying he’s fiercely protective of his players, ”this can’t be about the Core Four.  This is about the Toronto Maple Leafs.  It’s not about four players or two guys or one guy.”
Treliving thinks Sheldon Keefe is ”a really good coach” but he has not yet decided on whether he will return next season.
