Cell phone users in Canada could be getting a refund of the money they paid to download premium texting services and other content such as ringtones; fees as high $10 per transaction or $40 for a month for services such as weather or entertainment.
The Competition Bureau has filed suit against Rogers, Bell and Telus, accusing the providers of misleading their subscribers into thinking the downloads and text services were free.
The agency is seeking $10-million each from the country’s largest wireless carriers, plus $1-million from the industry’s main lobby group.
The bureau is seeking full customer refunds for subscribers charged for the downloads.
A total of $31-million for alleged misleading advertising.
The allegations have yet to be tested by a court or tribunal.
