Supporters of the High Park Zoo came together last night at Toronto’s Sunnyside Pavillion for a gala dinner and silent auction to celebrate the fundraising efforts that have kept the local landmark open after having its funding cut earlier this year.

City councillor Sarah Ducette tells AM 740/Classical 96.3FM News, the gala is a big start to raising the money needed to keep the zoo open in 2013.  “We would like to raise about $20,000 if we can”, she explained, “that’s our goal.  Every year we need about $227,000.  We have paid the city for this year.  We’ve now got some funds for next year.  So we’re looking to put it in the bank, so we know the zoo will run for another 119 years, hopefully.”

The cause is receiving support from Zoomer Media founder and High Park resident, Moses Znaimer.  He says its great to see the community come out to support such a worthwhile cause.   “There are very few places, especially in a city that’s going more and more highrise where you can actually touch a little bit of nature.  And I think when it’s time to set priorities, even those tough guy cost cutters should think twice before they kill the zoo.”

Others at last night’s event included Toronto resident Sue Lucas, who says, for her, the zoo brings back childhood memories.  You can support the zoo by making a donation.  There’s more information online at highparkzoo.ca.
