Today marks 25 years since Canada and the United States signed onto a free trade agreement.

Zoomers will remember the agreement was supposed to have bought Canadian exporters special access into the lucrative U-S market.  But opponents say Canada’s share of total American imports is now lower than it was in 1987, when the agreement was reached.

Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was instrumental in negotiating the deal.  He marked the agreement by attending a gala event in Toronto on Wednesday evening.
