A 1938 psychological thriller from Daphne du Maurier became a hit movie by Alfred Hitchcock. It also appeared destined for Broadway as a musical. But destiny has taken a bizarre turn.

Just days before Rebecca was to begin rehearsals in New York, the project has been shelved because of questions about its financial backing, and a growing suspicion that one of its primary investors never existed.

A secretive businessman named Paul Abrams had supposedly put up $4.5-million, but then died of malaria. But it’s looking like there never was any Paul Abrams. Rebecca’s producer, Ben Sprecher, says he now believes he was taken in by an elaborate fraud of forged documents and bogus correspondence.

The motive is unknown. The FBI is investigating. Sprecher vows Rebecca will eventually make it to Broadway.
