Academy Awards organizers have received a record 71 submissions for this season’s foreign-language prize.
The entries include Austria’s Amour from director Michael Haneke. It won the top prize at last May’s Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant as an elderly couple coping with the wife’s worsening health.
Kenya has submitted a film for the first time. David “Tosh” Gitonga’s Nairobi Half Life is being considered.
Canada’s entry is also set in Africa. Montreal filmmaker Kim Nguyen’s Rebelle tells the story of a child soldier in an un-named Aftrican country.
