Experts are calling for changes to a bill to amend Canada’s Food and Drug Act. They are in favour of some of the provisions in Bill C-17, but say additional powers are needed to protect the public. In an article published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, a group of drug safety researchers and experts in health law say the bill that gives the federal government powers to recall dangerous medications, contains several surprising loopholes. They say by no means does Bill C-17 offer a comprehensive solution to the many problems that have plagued the development, regulation and safe use of prescription drug use.
Matthew Herder at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine is the lead author. He and his colleagues say Health Canada must add several critical elements if it is to fulfill its goal of protecting patients. As an example, they say the proposed recall power should apply not only to those who sell the products. You can access the article in the CMAJ by clicking here.
