U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov meet in London in a final attempt to stop Sunday’s planned referendum in Crimea.
Residents of the peninsula will decide whether to remain part of Ukraine or become part of Russia.
Both Washington and the European Union say if the referendum, which they’ve declared illegal, goes ahead, Moscow will face fresh sanctions.
Ukraine’s prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, is accusing Russia of demonstrating unacceptable ”military aggression” that has ”no reason and no grounds”.
He told the UN security council, he’s convinced Russians don’t want war.
Yatsenyuk urged Russia’s leaders to heed the people’s wishes and talk with Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia’s again warned that it reserves the right to intervene in defence of ethnic Russians it says are under threat in eastern Ukraine.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement today that authorities in Ukraine have lost control over the country and are unable to provide basic public security.
