A day of firsts and lasts – at Queen’s Park.

The first Throne speech for Premier Kathleen Wynne’s majority Liberals – and the last  delivered by outgoing Lieutenant Governor David Onley – who expressed his gratitude for the support he received from MPP’s over the past seven years.

In his parting comments Onley said, “We have a unique form of government in which we all play different roles – yet despite its deficiences it is still quite a remarkable system and serves us well: So let us guard it with determination and dedication.”

Onley then progressed to the Throne speech laying out the government’s agenda for the future.

The Liberals say they’ll curb spending to meet the goal of eliminating the $12.5-billion deficit in three years.

But they also plan to spend $130 billion on public infrastructure over 10 years – as well as take other measures to help grow Ontario’s economy.

Onley said the government will also invest in education, skills training and corporate grants to boost the province’s economic potential.

But the government cautioned there’s no money for wage increases in the broader public sector – as new contract talks loom on the horizon.

The Wynne government also reiterated a pledge for a made-in-Ontario retirement plan.

The Ontario budget will be tabled on Monday, July 14th.
