American Olympic distance runner and World War II vet Louis Zamperini has died at age 97.
He survived 47 days on a raft in the Pacific after his bomber crashed, then endured two years in Japanese prison camps.
Before joining the military, Zamperini was a runner at USC.
He competed in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where he stood with other athletes near Adolf Hitler’s box and even got a picture of the Nazi leader.
Zamperini’s story was told in ”Unbroken,” Laura Hillenbrand’s 2010 bestseller and is the subject of a film by the same name coming out in December.
It’s directed by Angelina Jolie.
