MORE RAIN TODAY - BUT NOT AS BAD AS ONE YEAR AGO

It seems somehow appropriate that a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for Toronto and the GTA today – on the first anniversary of Toronto being deluged by a catastrophic rainfall. The Watch has since ended.

If you were in town at the time last year, you may remember: cars in low lying areas were nearly submerged and passengers had to be rescued from a water-filled GO train.

The major flooding in Toronto on July 8th, 2013 brought 126 millimetres of rain to Toronto’s Pearson Airport.

That’s a new record that just edged– out Hurricane Hazel in October 1954 – at 121 millimetres.

The resulting flooding last year also left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity and caused damage that resulted in $850 million dollars in preliminary insurance claims.

An Ontario insurance official says, “Water is the ‘new fire.’ That’s because water damage is now causing the most industry payouts.”

Meanwhile–  a  Rainfall Warning is no longer in effect for:
Caledon.
The Warning has also been ended for:  Innisfil – New Tecumseth – Angus
Orangeville – Grand Valley – Southern Dufferin County
Shelburne – Mansfield – Northern Dufferin County
