Toronto’s Lawrence Heights community is coming to terms with the loss of a passionate and caring supply teacher. Thirty-one year old Abshir Hassan was killed by gunfire outside his Lawrence Heights apartment building early yesterday in what Toronto Police say was a mistaken hit. The spray of bullets also struck an unidentified 22 year old man and an 18 year old woman. As of late yesterday, they remained in hospital with serious injuries. Colleagues at the local middle school near Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue say Hassan’s death is a tremendous loss for the students who thought so highly of him. They describe him as “adored by the children and full of energy and love for his career” and “very giving of his time with the students.”
The principal of Lawrence Heights Middle School recalled how he would write Hassan’s name on the blackboard when the popular teacher was coming in and the students would cheer.
