Canadian insurance companies and other concerned organizations are being urged to hold-off on requesting access to the results of genetic tests.
Canada’s Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien wants the industry to prove that such tests are needed and are indeed effective in assessing risk.
Hundreds of tests are available to detect genes that are known to increase a person’s risk of developing certain medical conditions – and currently there’s nothing in Canadian law that prohibits genetic discrimination.
