MORE HEATED MOMENTS AT CITY COUNCIL

Another day of controversy at Toronto City Hall yesterday. Most of it involved Rob Ford or an occasional ally of the mayor.

Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti has been docked three months’ pay by council after the Integrity Commissioner ruled he had violated the code of conduct by accepting an $80,000 gift at a fundraiser. The event last year was attended by lobbyists and others doing business with the city.

Mammoliti condemned the decision, and promised to fight it in court.

Council also voted to hire a criminal lawyer to determine whether Mammoliti’s actions call for a police investigation.

Yesterday’s council meeting began with a motion by Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly asking councillors to acknowledge the work of Councillor Krystin Wong-Tam and organizers of the recent World Pride celebration. All of the councillors stood and applauded but the Mayor stayed seated.

Reporters later challenged the mayor to explain why he wouldn’t stand up. He did not offer an explanation.

Councillors also voted to prevent the mayor, or any other city official, from holding a news conference where certain members of the media are not invited. Ford did that last week after returning from rehab.

And Ford ended a long and heated debate on a recommendation from the Integrity Commissioner that he apologize for robocalls to Councillor Paul Ainslie’s constituents over Ainslie’s decision to vote against the Scarborough subway.

The integrity commissioner had ruled that Ford’s robocalls contained inaccurate information that was intended to hurt Ainslie politically. Ford issued a terse apology, and Ainslie accepted.

Council continues today with 48 items remaining on the agenda.
