Israel’s military says it shot down an unmanned drone along its southern coastline today, the first time it has encountered such a weapon since its struggle with Hamas began last week.
Nearly one thousand rockets have been fired at Israel by the terror group, causing some injuries and property damage, but no fatalities. Palestinian reports say 172 Palestinians have died as a result of Israel’s air attacks.
Speaking through a translator, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Hamas is deliberately putting Palestinian citizens in harm’s way. “Hamas is using the residents of Gaza as a human shield and is bringing a catastrophe on the citizens of Gaza. Therefore the responsibility of every strike against citizens of Gaza, which we are sorry for, the responsibility is on Hamas, and their partners alone,” Netanyahu explained.
Thousands of people in Gaza have been warned by Israel that military action was imminent as Israel tries to put a stop to the Hamas rocket attacks.
Canada’s Prime Minister is calling on the international community to step up its condemnation of Hamas for its rocket attacks on Israel. Stephen Harper says silence will only embolden Israel’s enemies. The Prime Minister has issued a statement saying terrorists are deliberately using residents of Gaza as human shields, placing them in the path of Israeli strikes. Harper says recognizing the rocket attacks as unacceptable terrorist acts and showing solidarity with Israel is the best way of stopping the conflict.
