The number of older men consuming replacement testosterone has increased more than 300 per cent – in the last 15 years.

That’s according to a new study.

The therapy (known as T-R-T) has been aggressively marketed by drug companies as a treatment for age -related drops in testosterone, which can cause a loss of libido and lack of energy.

Lead researcher Tara Gomes is with the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network.

Gomes is concerned about the increase in testosterone usage because some studies have suggested that T-R-T may raise the risk of heart attack and stroke in some men.

She suggests having a long conversation with your physician if you are considering using T-R-T, to discuss the risks.

Gomes says prescribing rates in Ontario have largely been driven by topical testosterone – a gel formulation absorbed through the skin.
