The Senate expense scandal is expected to be back in the spotlight today.

The RCMP are preparing to lay criminal charges against suspended Senator Mike Duffy. They could include fraud and breach-of-trust.

The Mounties have been investigating Duffy over questionable expense claims for more than a year. The issue is $90,000 in expenses that Duffy claimed for his house in Ottawa. He maintains his primary residence is a cottage on Prince Edward Island. But, since he spent many years as a news correspondent on Parliament Hill, investigators are trying to determine how much time he spent in PEI.

The scandal reached into the Prime Minister’s office and embarrassed the Conservative government when it was revealed that Stephen Harper’s then-Chief of Staff had written a personal cheque to cover Duffy’s expenses. Nigel Wright resigned after the story went public.

The RCMP included Wright in their investigation, but dropped the case against him in April.

A trio of senators appointed by Prime Minister Harper have been under investigation. Charges have already been laid against Patrick Brazeau. The investigation into Pamela Wallin continues.
