You’re seeing and hearing a lot from the top four contenders in the race for Toronto’s mayor.  Incumbent Rob Ford and his challengers John Tory, Olivia Chow and David Soknacki are considered the main candidates leading up to the October 27th election.

But did you know there are actually 67 candidates running for Toronto’s mayor?  One of them called into the New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back to voice her frustration over not being heard.  “We’re not allowing diverse voices to the table,” complained D!ONNE Renee, “We’re not allowing the 98 percent to be heard.  We’re only allowing 2 percent to control media and what we hear…We need something different.  We don’t want the same old, same old.”

Renee was actually among 6 mayoral candidates at a debate last month organized by the Diversity Advancement Network called the Black Canadian Mayoral Forum.  Candidates discussed a number of topics, including affordable housing, Africentric education and the search for Toronto’s next police chief.  The issue of police carding, the system where people record the information of people stopped and questioned, was also discussed.

This evening at 6pm, the Etobicoke chapter of CARP – A New Vision of Aging – is holding a Toronto mayoral debate.  Mayor Rob Ford, and challengers John Tory, Olivia Chow and David Soknack have agreed to attend to discuss issues important to zoomers.  It’s being held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall on Jutland Road in the Queensway and Islington area of Etobicoke.
