And then there were three.

The race for mayor is down to John Tory, Rob Ford, and Olivia Chow.

Early in the day yesterday, Sarah Thomson dropped out of the race. And last night, David Soknacki did the same.

Soknacki has been polling in single digits since the race began. He announced his decision last night at a party to celebrate his 60th birthday. He did not endorse any of the front-runners.

And a new poll shows he wasn’t gaining any ground. In fact, all the momentum is in John Tory’s favour. The Forum Research poll taken Monday shows Tory’s support is up to 40 per cent. Ford is at 28 per cent, and Chow has fallen to 21 per cent.

Meanwhile, the three leading candidates took part in another debate last night. Tory, Ford, and Chow were at Villa Columbo for a session sponsored by the National Congress of Italian Canadians. Transit was the main issue and, in fact, has emerged as the major issue among voters in this campaign. The candidates were asked what their first request of Premier Kathleen Wynne would be. Ford said he’d ask to have provincial funding for the Finch and Sheppard LRTs re-directed to subways. Chow accused Tory of abandoning the downtown relief line, which she says should be the top priority. And Tory said he would like to see more support from the senior levels of government for all of the TTC’s costs.

The election is October 27th.
