South African double-amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been cleared of murder in his trial for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steencamp, but he still faces the possibility of a culpable homicide conviction as the lengthy verdict continues.

The famed “Blade Runner” who became a global icon as the first double amputee to compete against Olympic track athletes sobbed and trembled as a South African judge began delivering her verdict today.

It is far from a clear victory though.  In a Pretoria courtroom, Judge Thokozile Masipa criticized him as “evasive, untruthful and contradictory on the witness stand.”  But she found no evidence he had planned to kill Steenkamp when he fired four shots through his bathroom door on Valentine’s Day last year.  The judge said she felt Pistorius acted negligently when he fatally shot Steenkamp. She then stopped delivering her judgment and adjourned until tomorrow when a formal verdict in the case that has riveted much of South Africa and the world is expected.

The remaining charge is culpable homicide, also known as manslaughter.  The question is whether Pistorius was reckless and negligent in firing the bullets at the bathroom door, causing the death of his girlfriend.
